Calling all artists and art lovers.

Roll-Up Roll-Up For The First Telegraph Hill Xmas Art Bazaar At The Hill Station Café from 22 November – 26 December 2010
The Art Bazaar is an opportunity for artists to sell and art lovers to buy affordable art works in the run up to Christmas. The idea is to create a dense and enticing display of diverse, small and keenly priced art works that will make great gifts.

Each piece you sell means you get to replace it with a similar one until you’ve sold out!. 20% of each sale goes towards the Bold Vision project.

If you are interested in taking part we need you to bring one small artwork – ready to hang - to the Hill Station Café on Sunday 21st November at 5pm. We will also need title, name and price.

Please drop me a line to let me know if you intend to join in so we have an idea of numbers. Please feel free to forward this email onto anyone else you think would like to take part.

Bold Vision is good Big Society

I had a fantastic time on Sunday at the Big Bold Lunch Launch. The Hill Station was looking proper, the sun shone, the music was brilliant, the organisation was spot on. It's great that we were able to show off the new space at the same time as celebrating the Big Lunch. You may not know that there's a link now between the Big Lunch and the whole Big Society movement. The Big Lunch was started last year by Tim Smit who set up the Eden project, aiming to get the whole nation sharing food on one day, partly because cohesive communities are likely to be greener and more resourceful, partly to raise awareness of sustainable food. This year it launched Big Society week.

We can't escape news of Big Society at the moment as we hear about cuts to public services and how the gaps need to be filled at a more local level, with much more voluntary participation. It's extremely worrying for many of us, especially those who depend on these threatened public services for their basic wellbeing. However, there are some positive and helpful ideas coming out of the Big Society organisation (and they want our ideas to feed it too). Find out more here, including ideas such as Your Square Mile, a community-based bank that could benefit our Bold Vision.

Also, see here David Barrie's article sharing ten local schemes that are great examples of Big Society. These examples are very close in spirit to Bold Vision, and offer some ideas we could take and adapt.

Finally, one thing that really helps the spirit of Big Society is sharing your photos, videos and experiences of local community action. So do please contribute to the Telegraph Hill Visions Flickr group.

Our next event will be a 5-a-side football tournament in the Lower Park on May 22nd.

We are currently in the planning stage but anybody who wants to enter can pre-register by email. Teams are accepted in primary school (up to 11) and secondary school (11-14). We'd love to see both boys and girls playing.

There will be prizes for the winners!

We are also organising a World Food area for players and fans to keep up their energy levels. Why not bring along your signature dish and we will label it and add it to our global buffet? Bring a home made flag if you can to show us where your recipe comes from.

Special chance to hear a world class musician on your doorstep

On Monday 19th April, internationally acclaimed viola player Alexander Zemtsov gave a benefit recital in aid of the BOLD VISION café project accompanied on the piano by Catherine Edwards.

The programme featured music by Bach, Schubert, Hindemith and Brahms.

Over 100 local and not-so-local people in the audience were spellbound during the performance - which seemed even more magical as it got dark outside.

From ticket sales and interval refreshments we raised over £900 for Bold Vision.

Community toolkits?

I saw an article about a cafe in New York where Singer had loaned them some sewing machines, which could be rented out by customers. The cafe holds workshops where you can mend teddies or learn embroidery. It led me to wonder if Bold Vision could have a collection of tools e.g. in a lock-up cupboard that opens up to become a work station. It could include a sewing machine, a computer with high quality printer, possibly even a 3D printer. I'm thinking of core basic kit for creativity, not lots of messy things that need restocking or tidying all the time. What do people think? What could it include?

Firelight and logos

Good to see lots of you at the Initiation event this week. The fire felt right and we were delighted to see some new faces - with and without instruments.

We also took the opportunity to vote on logos for Bold Vision. There were 3 contenders. I did hear a couple of people saying they didn't like any of them... as you may know we had an open competition for entries and this is what we got. The three options are

We asked people at the event to tell us what they wished for in the space... here are some extracts...

Initiation Event

Some of you have already stood in our space - with a shovel or supporting the diggers. Now we can all gather at our initiation event on Wed Mar 17th between 7pm and 10pm.

Enjoy the drumming from Grupo Ase, have a beer, sit round the fire, dance if you want to, write on the walls, tell us what you want to happen in the space, be part of it.

Remember we haven't built our space yet so it is very basic - but this will be a heartfelt event where we start to build the atmosphere of our Bold Vision.

Some of you may be in the delivery area for the Meridian magazine. They will be publishing this story in their next issue - out early March. We also have a local PR specialist, Vanessa Hales, helping us out to get publicity in South London Press, Lewisham Life etc. If anyone has useful connections please let us know. We want to get the word to as many people as possible and have fewer conversations that start "what cafe? I never heard anything about that!" The copy for the article is below and I've also sent some pictures to them which they may have space for.

Residents in Telegraph Hill near Brockley / New Cross have decided to take matters into their own hands when it came to making space to get together and have set up a community owned company called Bold Vision.

"For a few years we have had something called Friendly Fridays in the park on sunny evenings,"explained Catherine Shovlin, a local businesswoman and one of the organisers, "And the annual Festival always attracts a lot of local residents. We wanted to extend this to a year round opportunity for members of our community to get together - for company, to help each other out, to work together, to relax together."

Bold Vision Ltd was incorporated in September 2009 and digging started on February 13th this year. The first Bold Vision project is to create a community cafe in what is currently the undercroft of the Telegraph Hill Centre. In a community survey, a cafe / shop came out as the clear winner when residents were asked what they wished was different. Lower down the list were problems of dog mess and bored teenagers. What Telegraph Hillers love about their area are the park, the view and the amazing sense of community.

Bold Vision needs to raise about £100,000 for the project. So far they have about a third of that thanks in part to the Mayor's Fund and a donation from Sainsbury's. But most of the money is coming from the community itself as individuals and households sign up to be Bold Backers - making a donation of £200 to the fund either as a one-off payment or via instalments, fundraising or sweat equity. In January a Bold Vision Gala Evening showcased some excellent performances from local musicians, actors and writers and raised over £1500.

"We are starting with the cafe,"explained Patricio Forrester, local artist and founding member Bold Vision, "but our vision is much greater than that. We are all about strengthening the community in Telegraph Hill - and we want to do that with imagination and creativity in a way that makes everybody feel a part of what is going on."

The design of the building is being led by John Knepler - local resident and architect. "We were keen to create a design that reflected the way we interact. It will be very open and flexible so that as well as operating as a cafe it becomes a space for the community to use - to display art, to learn about food or to listen to live performances. By having a glazed front wall that faces Telegraph Hill park and completely opens up in the summer we can connect to our leisure spaces and enjoy being in the heart of the hill and the community."

Thanks to everyone who came along and gave us so much support on Saturday. It's great to know lots of you agree with what we are trying to do.
